யாருக்கான முடிவை யார் எடுப்பது?😕

பெண்ணியம் பேசுபவர்களால் சமீப காலமாக அதிகம் பேசப்படும் விஷயமாக உள்ளது - "ஏன் இந்த சமூகத்தில் பெண்களுக்கான முடிவுகளை  பெண்களால் எடுக்க இயலுவதில்லை?"

இங்குமங்குமாக இந்நிலை மாறி வருகிறது என்றாலும், பெரும்பாலும் பெண்கள் தொடர்பான முடிவுகளை அவ்வீட்டு ஆண்கள் எடுப்பது வழக்கமாக உள்ளது. என்ன படிக்க வேண்டும், யாரை திருமணம் செய்து கொள்ள வேண்டும், தன் வருமானத்தை எவ்வாறு செலவு செய்ய/சேமிக்க வேண்டும், யாருடன் பழக வேண்டும், எவ்வளவு நேரம் நண்பர்களுடன் நேரத்தை செலவிடலாம், யாரெல்லாம் நண்பர்களாக இருக்கலாம் என பல நிலைகளில் பெண்களுக்கான திட்டங்களை வகுப்பவர், முடிவுகளை எடுப்பவர் என ஆண்கள் உள்ளனர். இப்பொருள் தொடர்பான நிறைய கதைகள், கட்டுரைகள், திரைப்படங்கள், நாடகங்கள் சமீபகாலங்களில் வலம் வருகின்றன. இப்பேசு பொருள் எனக்கும் நெருக்கமானது என்பதால் அது தொடர்பாக கிடைப்பதை பார்ப்பதும், கேட்பதும் வழக்கம்தான். அப்படி சமீபத்தில் வாசித்த கட்டுரை ஷாலினி பிரியதர்ஷினியின் "மீட்சி-சித்திரம் 15" - நாடோடிச் சித்திரங்கள் என்ற புத்தகத்தில்.

 

இதிகாசங்களை விரும்பிப் படிப்பவள் அல்ல நான். சிறு வயதிலும் இதிகாசங்கள் பற்றிய கதைகளினை நிரம்ப கேட்டவளும் அல்ல. என்றாலும் கூட இராமயாணம் மற்றும் மகாபாரதம் இந்துக்களின் நடைமுறை வாழ்வியலுள் எப்படியேனும்  புகுந்துவிடக்கூடியது என்ற அளவில் இராமயாணம் மற்றும் மகாபாரதம் பரிச்சயம். மேற்குறிப்பிட்ட புத்தககத்தின் கட்டுரையில் இராமாயணத்தில் பெண்ணுக்காக ஆண் எடுக்கும் முடிவு குறித்தும் அதன் விளைவுக்குறித்துமான ஒரு கிளைக்கதை வாசிக்கக் கிடைத்தது. 

இராமயாணம் என்றால் இராமர் ('ர்' விகுதியில் எழுத வேண்டுமா என்ற குழப்பம் நெடு நேரம் எனக்கு இருந்தது), சீதை, லட்சுமனர், இராவணர், ஹனுமன், ஜடாயு போன்ற பெயர்களும், கதாபத்திரங்களும் தான் பிரபலம். கிளைக் கதைகளில் இன்னும் ஒரு சில பெயர்கள் தெரியவந்திருக்கும். அவ்வளவே. நான் ஊர்மிளை என்ற கதாபாத்திரத்தினை கேள்விப்பட்டதில்லை.

இராமயாணத்தில் வனவாசம் முடிந்து இராமன், சீதை, லட்சுமனன் ஆகியயோர் நாட்டுக்குத் திரும்பும் போது இராமருக்கும் சீதைக்கும் கிடைத்த வரவேற்பு லட்சுமனருக்கு கிட்டவில்லை என்பது வேறு கதை. ஆனால் அவரின் மனைவி ஊர்மிளை அவரைக் காண வெளியில் வரவில்லையாம். இவர் தன்  மனைவியை காண உள்ளே சென்றபோது கதவை அடைத்துக்கொண்டு அவரை காண விருப்பமில்லை எனவும் இனி என்றுமே அவருடன் வாழ விருப்பமில்லை எனவும் கூறியிருக்கிறார். சுற்றியுள்ள அனைவரும் ஒரு மனைவி தன் கணவரிடம் இவ்வாறு நடந்துக்கொள்வது தவறு என்று  கடிந்துள்ளனர். எனினும் தன் நிலைப்பாட்டிலிருந்து ஊர்மிளை சிறிதும் பிறழவில்லையாம்.

தான் இவ்வாறு நடந்துக்கொண்டதற்குக் காரணமாக அவர் சொன்னது தன் கணவர் காட்டுக்குச் செல்ல முடிவெடுத்தது வரை தவறில்லை. அது அவரின் வாழ்க்கை, அவரின் அண்ணன் மீது உள்ள மரியாதை. ஆனால் அவர் வனவாசம் செல்லும் போது தன் மனைவி எங்கு வசிக்க விரும்புகிறாள் என கேட்காமல் லட்சுமணரே ஊர்மிளை நான்கு சுவர்களுக்குள் இருக்க வேண்டும் என முடிவெடுத்து அதன்படியே நடந்துக் கொண்டது ஏற்கத்தக்கதல்ல என தெரிவித்துள்ளார்.  தனக்கான முடிவினை தன்னை கலந்தாலோசிகாமல் தனக்கு விருப்பமில்லாத பாதையை தேர்ந்தெடுத்து தன் வாழ்வின் 14 வருடங்களை சிரமத்துக்குள்ளாகியதைச் சுட்டிக்காட்டி தனக்கு தன் கணவருடன் இனி எந்த உறவுமில்லை என திட்டவட்டமாக தெரிவித்துள்ளார்.  

அத்தைரியம் இல்லாத ஊர்மிளைகள் நம்மிடையே அதிகம்.😟

இரு வேறு சம்பவங்கள் 😊

முதல் சம்பவம்

சுதந்திர போராட்டக்காலம். காந்தியடிகளை குமரப்பா அவர்கள் நிச்சயம் சந்திக்க வேண்டும் என பலர் கூறி வந்த நிலையில், அவர்களின் சந்திப்பு நிகழ்ந்தது. குமரப்பாவின் வாழ்க்கையை மாற்றியது. தன் பங்கினை சிறப்பாக செய்து வந்தார் குமரப்பா. ஒரு முறை பீகாரில் நில நடுக்கத்தால் ஏற்பட்ட பாதிப்புகளுக்கான நிவாரணத் தொகை தொடர்பான வேலையில் இருந்துள்ளார். அப்போது ஒரு நாள் காந்தியடிகள் குமரப்பாவை சந்திக்க பீகார் வந்துள்ளார். குமரப்பாவிற்கு அப்பணியை வழங்கிய இராஜேந்திர பிரசாத் அவர்கள் குமரப்பாவை சந்திக்க இயலாது என தெரிவித்துள்ளார். குமரப்பாவின் பணியின் முக்கியத்துவத்தை புரிந்துகொண்ட காந்தி  குமரப்பாவை தான் நாளை சந்திக்க வருவதாகக் கூறிச் சென்றுள்ளார். மறு நாள் காந்தி வந்த போது குமரப்பா தான் வேலையாக இருப்பதாகக் கூறி மறுநாள் வரும்படி கூறியுள்ளார். காந்தி, தான் அன்று இரவே ஊருக்கு செல்வதாகக் கூறியவுடன், தன்னை சந்திக்க வருவதை முன் கூட்டியே தன்னிடம் தெரிவித்திருக்க வேண்டும் எனவும், தனக்கு வேலை இல்லாமல் இருந்திருந்தால் தானே காந்தி அவர்களை சந்திக்க வந்திருப்பேன் எனவும் கூறி காந்தியடிகளை சந்திக்கவில்லை. காந்தியடிகளும் தான் சந்திக்க வந்த காரணத்தை எழுதி குமரப்பாவிடம் சேர்க்கும்படி தந்துவிட்டுச் சென்றுள்ளார். இரண்டாவது சம்பவம்

டேவிட் ஹாஸ்பக் (David Horsburg) என்பவர் 1972ல் கர்நாடகா மாநிலத்தில் கிராமப்புற மாணவர்களுக்கு  மாற்றுக்கல்வியனை தன் "நீல் பாக்" (Neel Bagh) என்ற பள்ளி மூலம் வழங்கி வந்தார். அவரின் பள்ளியின் பெருமையினை கேள்விப்பட்ட அப்போதைய பிரதமர் இந்திராகாந்தி அவர்கள் ஒரு முறை கர்நாடக மாநிலம் சென்றிருந்தபோது தான் அந்த பள்ளியினை பார்வையிட விரும்பியுள்ளார். தன் ஆட்களை அனுப்பி தான் வரவிரும்பும் செய்தியினை டேவிட்டிடம் தெரிவித்துள்ளார். சிறிது யோசனைக்குப் பிறகு பிரதமர் அவர்களுக்கு தன்னால் போதிய பாதுகாப்பு ஏற்பாடுகள் செய்ய இயலாது என்பதை அந்தச் செய்தி கொண்டு வந்தவர்களிடம் டேவிட் சொல்லி அனுப்பியுள்ளார். சில மணி நேரங்களுக்குப் பிறகு, தான் மட்டும் ஒரே ஒரு காரில் வருவதாகவும், அதிகபட்சம் இன்னொரு கார் மட்டும் வரும்படி தான் பார்த்துக்கொள்வதாகக் கூறி தன் ஆட்களை இந்திரா காந்தி அவர்கள் அனுப்பிவைத்துள்ளார். தன் பள்ளிக்கு பிரதமர் வந்து சென்றால் தேவையற்ற விளம்பரமாகும் என்று கருதியும், வருகைக்குப்பின் அவ்விடம் ஒரு சுற்றுலா தலமாகக்கூடும் என கருதியும் அவர்கள் வருவதை டேவிட் அனுமதிக்கவில்லை. பிரதமரும் டெல்லி சென்றுவிட்டார். எனினும் பிரதமர் தன் அலுவலகம் மூலமும், கர்நாடக மாநிலத்தின் பல்வேறு அரசு அலுவலகங்கள் மூலமும் பல விதமான அழுத்தங்கள், இடர்பாடுகள் கொடுக்கப்பட்டதை டேவிட் உணர்ந்துள்ளார். பெரிய பதவிகளில் இருந்த அவரது நண்பர்களும் இதனை உறுதிப்படுத்தியுள்ளனர்.  பிரதமரின் உத்தரவுகளை மீறி தங்களால் டேவிட் அவர்களுக்கு எந்த உதவியும் செய்ய இயலாதது குறித்தும் வருந்தியுள்ளனர். தலைமை பண்பின் முற்றிலும் மாறுபட்ட உதாரணங்களாக இவ்விரு சம்பவங்களை பார்க்கிறேன். முதல் சம்பவத்தில் குமரப்பாவிற்கு இருந்த தெளிவும், துணிச்சலும் அதனை காந்தி அவர்கள் எடுத்துக்கொண்ட விதமும் இன்று காண்பதற்கரிது. இரண்டாம் நிகழ்வில் மற்றொருவர் இடத்திற்கு தான் வரவிரும்பியதை உரிய மரியாதையுடன் கேட்டனுப்பியது ஒரு புறம், அதை நிராகரித்த டேவிட் அவர்களின் தைரியம் ஆச்சரியத்தை அளிக்கிறது. அதன் பின்னர் நடந்தவை கசப்பானது என்பதும், அவை தலைமை பொறுப்பில் உள்ளவர்களுக்கு உகந்த பண்பில்லை என்பதும் மறுக்கயிலாது. 

'இல்லை', 'முடியாது' போன்ற வார்த்தைகளை நாம் சொல்லப் பழக வேண்டியது அவசியம். அதே போன்று அவ்வார்த்தகளை ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளவும் பெரிய கற்றலும் பக்குவமும் தேவைப்படுகிறது!!💖

Wrestlers Protest! 💪💕

It is disheartening to find that government continues to turn its deaf ears to the protest of our wrestlers in Jantar Mantar, New Delhi. it is not new to us witnessing such indifference - recall farmers' protests in Delhi. 

 

Sexual harassment is no joke. Women taking it up to the streets are not a routine to our eyes and takes a lot of courage to do so. This case is against the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) President, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and it does not seem to be an easy walk for the protesters.

Yet, as a woman and mother, I take a handful of stories to pass it on to many. 

It is highly appreciable that male wrestlers have joined hands right from the beginning to stand with their female counterparts, come what may. Not everywhere one finds men unconditionally supporting their female colleagues. The allegation is proved or not, the first step is to listen and reiterate that they are with us. Bajrang Punia proves to be a real gentleman! 💖

The protest site is witnessing multiple donors donating food, water and the like. Most of them are said to be farmers! 💕 

Coaches from across have gathered to show their solidarity and this by all means boosts the confidence among women wrestlers.😇

Today's The Hindu (06.05.2023) mentioned about a supporter aged 15! Accompanied by his father who is a coach himself. It is a duty of parents to show both sides of a coin. At the tender age of 15, a boy, being a part of the protest against sexual harassment is truly commendable! Some good signs for future!👫

Above all, the protest site has also become the practicing field for everyone. The photographs show that there are many number of coaches, players of all ages and parents visiting everyday. There are youngsters admitting that this protest has a silver lining which is that they are able to get trained by their role-models and who they have always looked up to on television! 💪

This whole scenario is unfortunate. Yet, the stories we see, hear and read say a lot about being together during the hardest times and the magic in being one of the loud voices for the right cause!

Sorry state of PhD scholars!!!

If you are a supervisor of PhD scholars or likely to be one in the future, 

please inform your prospective candidates of an approximate (legal) financial commitment they are likely to indulge in as a result of registering for PhD. Give them a higher figure rather than keeping it low, taking into consideration of changing Universities' policies. Doing a PhD does involve money. This is a no-nonsense fact. If they seem to be feel the course expensive or not affordable, DO NOT TAKE THEM.

If you tell me that PhD is not meant only for affordable candidates and no research-oriented candidate can be denied higher education, then it is reasonable to expect that they crack one of many fellowships such as JRF and ICSSR fellowship. In this case, they become independent, affordable and earn due respect during the course of PhD. 

This being impossible coupled with poor financial status, it is the sincere duty of the supervisor not to take up the candidate and explain the same in a pragmatic manner.

There is no guarantee that every PhD candidate would land on a job right after completion. Therefore, any candidate who enters with an idea that they would be given a job after PhD must be aware that this is a myth and it is the role of the supervisor to dissect it in front of them.

This denial is not an anti-scholar or anti-research or anti-education move but more of creating a better research environment in the society. Having seats filled under a supervisor is no achievement but being transparent enough to expose the right things is!!!!

It is not possible for a prospective candidate to look through this as they get carried away with one of the highest degrees in the country. Thus, it becomes the responsibility of supervisors! The pride of a supervisor is being true to the discipline, research and the candidate and nothing more!!!!

Not connected, Yet connected - Jacinda Ardern

The days of COVID brought the name 'Jacinda Ardern' closer to many of us. During her two tenures as the Prime Minister of New Zealand, like all her counterparts across the world, she had to make rough political and policy decisions. Even when she had strong opposition from her own citizens, she was praised for her personality and some of her strong moves by the outside world. 

The country had a very low death rate due to her strong decision of keeping the borders closed and strict enforcement of COVID regulations within the country. It had affected the bottom workforce and unemployment issues had been raised later, yet her firm decision made the country safe from the deadly virus.

She is said to be the second woman ever in the entire world to bear child after assuming the top most position in the country. Delivering child and taking care did not stop her from attending high profile meetings such as the UN's carrying her child along. This became viral and portrayed to the world that 'glass ceilings' are worth  discussing every now and then. Becoming a mother herself, she brought in new maternity rules.

She vehemently made decisions towards eradication of tobacco, particularly among the youngsters who supposedly are the future of the country. 

Besides, she proved to be a loyal worker for the citizens at times of natural disaster (volcanic eruption) and man-made disaster (terrorist attack). Everywhere she reiterated the fact that she was one among the victims and she stood by them at those difficult times.

 

It is never easy for a woman to hold a high position in the hierarchy and sustain without a strong fall. She withstood many with her head held high. Yet, her announcement on resigning and retiring came as a shock to many of us.   But it takes a lot of courage to publicly state her reason as she did; no men would be daring to the same. Quoting her 'There isn't enough in the tank,' - She admits that she could take only this much and would like to divert her energy on her marriage and kid which is universally common. 

Though there can be no man on earth to quit politics for family reasons, may be this is how women choose to live. Either to fight, sacrifice and withstand personal losses - like many women leaders we had witnessed - in a long run in politics or quit at some point in time and lead a (hopefully) peaceful life. 

I personally do not think that this action of hers could ever question the leadership of a woman. On contrary, it says women are stronger to make harder decisions! No matter what, Jacinda Ardern is truly an inspiration and a story to be told to our younger girls.  💝

பெற்றோர்களே காரணம்

டோமோயி நூலகம் தொடங்கி ஒரு வருடமாகப் போகும் நிலையில், அடுத்த நூலகம் சார்ந்த பணி மந்த நிலையிலேயே உள்ளதை நினைத்து பல நாள் வீட்டில் உரையாடுவதுண்டு. அனைத்தும் சாத்தியமாவதில்லை என்ற நிதர்சனம் புரிந்து அடுத்த வேலையை கவனிக்கத்தொடங்குவோம்.

நூலகம் நிரந்தர கட்டடத்தில் வைக்க முடியாமல் போனால் என்ன? நாமே நடமாடும் நூலகமாக செயல்பட தொடங்குவோம் என முடிவு செய்தோம். உலகின் பல மூலைகளில் இம்மாதிரியான நடமாடும் நூலகங்கள் பல இருந்துள்ளன. இன்றும் உள்ளன. (Inspired by 'That Book Woman', 'The Bibbliburro')

அருகாமையில் உள்ள  வெள்ளாளங்குளம் என்ற கிராமத்திற்கு குடும்பசகிதமாக இரு மூட்டைகளை சுமந்து தெருக்களில் நடக்கத் தொடங்கினோம். அந்த ஊரில் தான் எங்களுக்கு பசும்பால் தரும் நபரின் வீடு உள்ளதால் அங்கிருந்து தொடங்குவோம் என எண்ணி அவர்கள் வீட்டில் உள்ள மூன்று பெண் குழந்தைகளுக்கு புத்தகங்களை அளித்தோம். ஒருத்தி மட்டும் அப்புத்தகத்தை தொடவே மாட்டேன் என உறுதியாக இருந்தாள். நான் படிக்க மாட்டேன், எனக்கு வேண்டவே வேண்டாம் என திடமாகக் கூறினாள். சரி என அந்த வீட்டின் ஒரு பிள்ளையைக் கூட்டிக் கொண்டு வீடு வீடாகச் செல்லத் துவங்கினோம்.

தெருவில் சில குழந்தைகள் ஆர்வமாக புத்தகங்களைப் பெற்றுக் கொண்டதுடன் தன் தோழர்களையும் கூப்பிட்டுவந்து புத்தகங்களைப் பெற்றுச் சென்றனர். சில தாய்மார்கள் இலவசமாகத்தான் என்றவுடன் பெற்றுக்கொள்ள சம்மதித்தனர். பெரும்பாலான பெற்றோர்கள் கூறிய ஒரே விஷயம், "எங்க வீட்டுப் பிள்ளைங்க வீட்டுப்பாடத்தையே படிக்க மாட்டேங்குதுங்க, இதுல எதுக்கு இந்த புக் எல்லாம்." மேற்கொண்டு பேசவே வாய்ப்பு தரப்படவில்லை. விரட்டி அடிக்காத குறை.

கதை புத்தகங்களை விரும்பிப் படிக்கும் குழந்தைகள் தங்களின் பள்ளிப்பாடங்களை சிறப்பாக படிக்க இயலும் என்ற உண்மையை அவர்களுக்கு எப்படி புரிய வைப்பது!!!!

சிரமம் தான். அதனால் தான் அந்த ஊர் பிள்ளைகளுடன் 'கோலி' விளையாடி நண்பர்களாக முயற்சி செய்கிறோம். நமக்கு எதுக்கு பெரியவங்களோட சகவாசம்! 😆
