As I am suffering from fever ЁЯШВ

'As I am suffering from fever' is a common (unforgettable) phrase we all had come cross.ЁЯШВ This is how most of our generation were taught to write a leave letter while in school as our teachers thought 'physical sickness' would be the only predominant reason. We couldn't get over it even after years ЁЯШЬ Such an impact it has on us! Interestingly, we still spill those words among friends while we are about to apply for leave in our offices. Most cite sickness as reason for leave which according to me has come from this loooonnnngggg history of letter writing practice given in our English classes. Children during school days give reasons of condolences in families (true in rare cases and mostly this practice is taught by parents) which change as we grow older. Personality of us is tuned in such a way that 'safe reasons' are to be stated in order to get our leave request sanctioned by our superiors.

Only two types of decision could be made toward our request.

1. Accepted

2. Rejected

If one has her/his leave eligibility, no matter what your reason is, it will be accepted in almost all cases, except for any emergency situation in the office

If one doesn't have enough number of leave days to her/his credit, either the application would be rejected and if insisted those days would be treated as loss of pay.

Doesn't it sound simple!!! Yes. Still, we hunt for 'safe reasons'. This could be attributed to the personality of our superior which matters in this matter to a good extent. They vary from being cordial to highly rude, from being empathetic to autocratic. As we have no direct control over their personality & behaviour, we tend to play games safe at workplace, let alone leave request.

Absenteeism Cartoons and Comics - funny pictures from CartoonStock

These being on one side, we have quite a few celebrities who take off from their work citing their mental health reasons on the flip side. Naomi Osaka from French Open, Ben Stokes from England Test & Simone Biles from Olympics are some examples. They attracted excess attention due to this fact, yet they showed the world that they respect their body, mind and soul more than any media pressure. This trend leads to the realization of 'it's okay not to be okay.' and it is important to 'admit the same'.

The reason we state does not matter as long as we are able to take off from our work. No one would have questioned these celebrities if they had cited any physical injury. But they have made a difference now!!!

Well, Won't it make a difference if we are able to cite the exact, honest, real reason for the need of a break? Who stops us from doing so? To go out with family/friends, to watch a movie at home with children to de-stress, to clean the mess at our house, to jump on our beds for a full day rest, to finish the last few pages of novel that we could not resist, to get the water tank cleaned or to just stay idle at home are all as much fair reasons as our sickness card is. These things could be done on a weekend is totally out of context.

Leave Of Absence Cartoons and Comics - funny pictures from CartoonStock

I would proudly say that as a subordinate I keep my superior informed of the real reason and as a superior I have always appreciated my colleagues doing so. If we presume that our superiors will not appreciate, it is high time that we start doing it every single time we apply for leave and normalize the whole process. End of the day, it is our inner happiness & peace that would drive us to work and increase our productivity. Normalizing our casual leaves certainly is a key factor in contributing to that inner happiness! This does not take a big effort, after all it is nothing but being honest to oneself! ЁЯТХ

P.S.: This does not apply to those who have no intention of performing/being efficient at work at all!

And as far children and leave are concerned, that will be discussed in another post!!

Free to commute: A road to women empowerment ЁЯЪМЁЯЪН

Woohoo.....ЁЯТк

Women in Tamil Nadu are celebrating ЁЯОЙthe new policy of the newly formed government, free bus service within districts. Among all, Tirunelveli is found to have the highest number of users (beneficiaries). ЁЯСП

Without a doubt, this policy move has largely benefitted a lot of women working in unorganized sector with poor wages and job insecurity. It does save them quite a handful of money. There are women in my office who do not hesitate to take break of journeys (from a minimum of two to a maximum of four) to avail this benefit and save their daily bus fares. ЁЯСН There are some around who used to walk several kilometers to reach office to save their hard earned remuneration. Given their jobs as sweepers and scavengers, they are now happy for being able to travel at free of cost. ЁЯЩМ There are thousands of such stories in Tamil Nadu to narrate and to be recorded on real benefits of this decision of free bus service to women within district.

This is a baby step towards a far existing destination - women empowerment - yet a significant one. ЁЯПЖ These women who save money by using free public transport climb the first step in the ladder of financial empowerment. Besides that, the ability to travel anywhere with no cost gives a sense of social empowerment. Non-working women who are largely dependent on their husbands for money to visit anywhere - be it a temple or their parents' house - gets that tiny bit of relief now. Being socially connected is a step closer now.  ЁЯСлЁЯСнЁЯСмЁЯСн

There are allegations from conductors that women began to travel with no reason as it is free. 'What's wrong in it?' is the question!!!!

Let us (women) not allow anyone tell us 'use this freedom appropriately' for a simple reason that 'let all of us - women - step out and roam around, even if it is to pass time.'  It is not just the measurable output of a policy (such as number of beneficiaries, the routes highly used by women, etc.) is important but its outcome too (sometimes measurable, many a times not). ЁЯШКЁЯШК

Amidst such good things, never mind of
  • Some men and even women claiming that this policy as one useless and waste of public tax money.ЁЯЩН
  • Men passengers' agitation towards free travel of women. It is heard that many men passengers are reluctant to share the common seats (partitioned portion) with women after this policy implementation. ЁЯСО
  • Male conductors considering women as worthless in terms of revenue generation for transport department.ЁЯШа
  • Male drivers hesitant to stop buses at stops where women crowd is seen (such behaviour is typical of our drivers during school/college hours where most of them would travel with a free pass).ЁЯЩЕ
(These males would soon accept the fact that women of their families are availing the same too)ЁЯШЖ

A friend of mine whose PhD thesis was on Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) in Chennai once said that there were handful of benefits in making public transportation totally free. Some of them include reduction in pollution and cost cutting by removal (or transfer) of conductors and ticket checkers. This step of making it free for women in limited jurisdiction could be a move towards free public transport.ЁЯЪМ

Who could give us the best except our government!!! ЁЯЩП

Why can't adults have some fun too? ЁЯШЙ

Earlier days, every road used to be spacious enough for children to play and adults to walk the talk! There used to be many playgrounds where children and adults play in their group-defined territory on weekends! This right-turned-privilege has changed over a period of time due to urbanization and dense housing everywhere. There are a few real playgrounds left in every district and those are not in the immediate neighbourhood as they used to be. Even schools lacking enough play space is another thing.

As a replacement, government has been opening parks in every community. Any place with more than a hundred or two has a park of their own. Visibly, these parks all across the state has similar structure and play equipment. There is a huge walking space designed around the play area for adults and there are seats meant for resting and chatting. Overall, these parks are for good health and recreation. The private hotel spaces that have play area are also meant strictly for children. While adults relax for a while, children spend time playing. So far so good!!

                                            courtesy: google images

Now to my focal point,

What wrong did adults do to not use the play equipment in such parks is something I wonder about!! Why are they meant only for children? In most places, they are meant for those below five years of age!!!! Even the law calls everyone till the age of 18 as a child!! And many grown-ups are still child at heart, mind and body!

Won't adults love to swing for a while?

Do we not get the tickle to slide?

Can't we enjoy a bit of 'see-saw'?

Don't we see adults who break this rule in parks to pamper and refresh themselves?

Do we not use them under the pretext of holding our child?

Most of these times, adults are literally thrown out citing age reasons!

The predominant reason for such age restriction is the quality of play equipment. They are made to bear the weight of children below a particular age. And the other ironic reason is adult policymakers categorize play areas & equipment for children and walking area for adults. What's wrong if I see this as an unacceptable exclusion? I and all of us deserve to have fun, irrespective of our age.

Will it not make a huge difference if those are inclusive - for adults and differently-abled too - in nature? Who will pass this message to decision makers? Amidst other burning challenges that face adults, parks might be of little significance, unfortunately!!!!

Reel and Real in God's own country!

Everyone on earth would fall in love at first sight with the landscape of God’s own country. Besides its scenic beauty, the state has several other feathers to the cap such as the highest literacy rate in the country, existence of communism – though in pieces, assertiveness of its people, never-ending interest to learn multiple languages, so on and so forth.

Of course, the state has its own other side!!!! Of them, there is quite a lot of contradictions seen and heard of late. One such is the reel and real picture of Kerala.

No matter what the grave COVID situation was/is, the state’s film industry has been making quite a number of movies, most of them being good and did not fail to attract attention from a wide audience. Particularly, “The Great Indian Kitchen” evoked a huge (positive) public response for it deals with dirty patriarchy, and the firm stance of the female lead towards the climax. Another latest flick, “Sara’s”, touches upon a sensitive subject – to or not to give birth to a child is the decision of women. This movie again has a strong woman lead, who amidst the conventional rain of questions, decides what is best of her. Not just these, many a number of Malayalam movies give a strong role to female characters.

Such films being on the reel side, real news on the other side gives an ugly picture of Kerala such as women succumbing to domestic violence, early girl marriages, gory dowry deaths and silence acceptance of every other form of abuse. Immaterial of the educational qualification of women, these cases are quite normal and often featured in media.

That brings me to the point of contradictions! Are these progressive movies a depiction of exceptional instances to be the harbinger for future? Are the movie-makers sincerely progressive enough to think beyond real? Is the Malayalam film fraternity trying to paint the real nasty, offensive behaviour with reformist ideas to please the outside world? Are such movies made to attract mere attention and have a hit at the box office? Are these the genre meant for winning awards? God knows!

Once Tamil Director Mani Ratnam was questioned by a (female) fan as to how and why his movies’ female lead characters – since his early days of movie making – are strong and bold when the reality was/is no way near. He said that he always wanted to see women around him that way and therefore he did/does portray them so. He also added that it was his wish to see women everywhere evolve stronger and stronger like his characters do.

If Malayalam movies  do the job of making their women tougher and decisive in making their own lives’ path, it is more than fair!  After all, we all look forward to a better world!

Relishing Calvin and Hobbes ЁЯТХ

The national daily "The Hindu" has always featured the famous comic strip Calvin and HobbesЁЯТХ But I have begun to associate myself to it in my late 20s or early 30s only. ЁЯШЫ

Being the first in my family to go to an English medium school, purchasing and reading an English daily was never ever a thought. Always felt that English newspapers were meant for upper elite class ЁЯШО where my peer groups were second generation English learners ЁЯШЕ.

Even after newspapers began to catch its space during the course of higher education, I had always been reluctant to read Calvin and Hobbes ЁЯЩИ. I wonder WHY!!!! I could arrive at few absurd reasons:

(1) in newspaper, it is always in black and white, and most importantly in small fonts;

(2) always assumed that the language level would be hard;

(3) back then, thought it was meant for those elite KIDS and not to ones of my age!

I was wrong in almost all fronts!! Comic strip has more to do with pictures and less with fonts ЁЯСА. And language is far easier than what I used to read in Editorial page ЁЯШВ and above all, Calvin and Hobbes is for both adults and children!!! ЁЯСкЁЯШН

How adventurous it would be for kids to imagine a tiger toy becoming the best friend! Any kid would get its imagination widened to befriend its favorite animal ЁЯШ╗ And every kid and adult would see themselves in Calvin in one place or the other ЁЯШВЁЯШЖЁЯШЕ Truly fun-filled! and rarely tears-filled too! ЁЯШК

The strip effortlessly deals with the most basic yet the most difficult subject on earth "Philosophy" in the most entertaining and catchy manner! Be it anything and everything under the sky that concerns a child (from school to death) is stunningly depicted and captioned ЁЯШЗ

Lately, I find a lot of similarities between Calvin and Shin Chan ЁЯТЮ and I love both of them, of course Hobbes too ЁЯТЯ And my day doesn't end without them! ЁЯШШ

P.S.: I really wonder why my English teachers never made a mention of any comic strip which is always an easy and attractive way to approach the language!!!! ЁЯШЮ

Who Wrote the Indian Constitution? ЁЯТн

"Who wrote the Indian Constitution?" - If this question was asked to me, I would have straight away said "Dr Ambedkar", ...
